The Region

A place that you will never forget

The beautiful and diverse region of Occitaine formerly known as Languedoc-Roussillon, nestling in the foothills of The Pyrenees, has remained one of France’s best kept secrets for many years.

Bounded by the Pyrenees, Andorra and Spain in the south, the region extends north as far as the Massif Central. Stunning mountains slope to the beautiful, unspoilt valley floor, dotted with rural villages, surrounded by vineyards which produce excellent local wine, making the region the largest wine producer in Europe.

The Alberes are the mountains which form the eastern end of the Pyrenees, separating France from Spain. This area is also known, more locally, as the Catalonian region, rich in history, culture and tradition.

The contrast and variety of the Occitaine region offers a perfect holiday solution for all members of the family, or group of friends. It possesses stunning mountain scenery (Le Canigou dominating the landscape in all its splendour), sandy beaches at Le Racou (10km), Argeles Plage(11km), St Cyprien (20km) & Canet Plage (22km), mountain walking trails, horse riding, golf, water sports and water parks are all readily available. There is an abundance of trendy and exciting ports with excellent restaurants serving fresh sea food, Catalonian dishes and local wines.

If sightseeing is what you like to do then there are many places of interest within a 2 hour radius of Laroque. The historical Catalonian city of Perpignan, the medieval walled city and France’s second most popular tourist attraction at Carcassone, Cathar Castle, the tranquil Canal due Midi, the exciting city of Barcelona and the scenic drive through the mountains to Andorra (a slightly more extended journey).

Approximately 15km from Laroque, there is the small medieval walled town of Collioure, nestling in a beautiful natural harbour with its Gothic clock tower rising from the twinkling Mediterranean sea surrounded by vineyards. Collioure, known as “The Jewel of the Vermilion coast”, is an artist’s paradise, possessing winding streets lined with interesting shops and restaurants and beach front cafes where a coffee can last for as long as you can make it!

The village of Laroque 5 minutes from the apartment has excellent amenities including a boulangerie, chemist, and several bars and restaurants.
